Strength

Some say the sight of cardinals signifies strength, loyalty, and passion, even messages from loved ones who’ve left this world.

My human saw five cardinals on one walk this week and as she marveled at their beauty and vibrance, I rolled and twerked in grass, not poop but pasture. There were likely pee droplets on the blades, but not having to clean caca off me in the public restroom was cause for celebration.

So while my human enjoys some bad dancing over my (likely) mild disgustingness, I’d like to share my wisdom about strength as we enter Mother’s Day weekend.

How can humans bring more compassion to your courage and more thoughtfulness to your tenacity?

Strong backbones don’t require banging on your chest or bullying someone into believing your point of view. What if strength was signing off and snuggling under a blanket when there’s a storm, honoring your heart, until you’re ready to accept the truth and change course?

Maybe firmness isn’t firing off more messages but stepping back, saying, “I need space,” and taking time to think about the tiny cuts you’re enduring and the kindest way for all parties to mend and heal together.

And maybe, just maybe, asking those you love how they want to be loved could help resolve past pain. You meet your dogs where they are, all day, every day. The world could be happier and more peaceful if everyone asked that simple question.

In honor of the mothers who’ve loved my human, she’s celebrating this weekend remembering the sparkle in her Angel Nanny’s (grandmother) eyes every time someone she loved walked into the room and celebrating side-by-side the pure joy her mom (my nanny) brings to everyone, all day, every day, no matter what’s going on in her life.

Ah, softness and strength. How beautiful.

Love,
Mabel, Sweet Good Girl
