Silence

Silence

I’m a pretty quiet dog.  I have my hyped-up-hyena-Mabel moments in the car when the weather’s caused my human and I to be more cooped up than we’d like.  And, if my human’s not cradling and talking to me when I see a too-close dog, I squeal, squawk, and screech while standing on my back paws.  Fortunately, we don’t have many of either of those moments.

I even sit silently, waiting for my share of our morning eggs (sans salt and pepper).  And I sweetly stay close by when my human’s making dinner, knowing I’ll get steamed veggies too.  And, if she occasionally eats something I can’t have at the kitchen table, I bounce around excitedly but wordlessly go back to my bone.

Our silence may be part of why humans love dogs so much.  We don’t say (or type) mean things.  When you meet most of our physical and mental needs, and we’re nestled next to you, we peacefully nuzzle your nose.

We don’t misunderstand or misinterpret your words.  We try hard to understand your language and are grateful when you’re patient and help us learn what you want.

We don’t dump our dilemmas in your lap or inbox.  After an outburst, we move on, ready to explore and enjoy time together, loving you as much as we did before we barked and lunged at another dog.

We bring speechless, simple joy to your lives.

We gleefully gallop in, then gobble up snow while you nurture your soul on a nature walk and smile softly at the one bird brave enough to flutter through the still winter sky.  We stretch out next to you after we’ve been in the car for too long, running errands together, calmly content to lay by your side while you catch up on emails.  And, with every second we share, we quietly and knowingly trust and love you more.

Dogs are the best, aren’t we?
