Dog Safe Holiday Tips

It’s so fun to spruce up your home for the holidays, but to keep the season festive and safe for Fido, consider these super easy tips so you enter the new year with glee together.

Deck your halls with dog-safe foliage

If you’re a real tree fan, pick spruce, fir, or pine. Secure your tree so a fun game of tug doesn’t topple it over, pick up needles to prevent ingestion, and prevent your pup from drinking tree water that could cause an upset tummy. Christmas cactus and prayer plants are safe, non-toxic alternatives to poisonous poinsettias and mistletoe.

Heirlooms belong on high

If your holiday decorations include sentimental ornaments or breakable baubles, consider keeping them on a shelf where your pup can’t reach them. Alternatively, if your dog isn’t an eager jumper or lover of glitter and gold, securely attach them with twine or ribbon high on your tree so tinselled trimming doesn’t tempt your beloved best friend.

When in doubt, train.

Busy holidays often cause us to shorten walks or skip play sessions with our dogs, causing boredom and sometimes unwanted behavior. Prevent chasing your canine around chanting “no, no, no” with short, fun training sessions while dinner cooks. An easy game of scattering treats on the floor or hiding dinner in a rolled-up rug will help keep your dog happy even amidst holiday hubbub.

We hope you and your dog(s) have the merriest, brightest, and safest holidays.
