Precious

Four people I love have lost (passed away) dogs they love in recent weeks. And, while my sisters (birth and soul) and two dear friends’ loss and grief journeys aren’t mine, they remind me that life is too freaking short.

We have so few days on this earth. Why do we squander our free moments? Why do we let unsavory feelings and situations churn repeatedly in our heads and hearts? Why do we not say “thank you” all day, every day, for the clothes on our backs, a roof over our heads, and food when we want it?

We should recognize that amidst messy moments, stressful situations, harrowing heartbreak, and even bombshell betrayals, there’s so much beauty, love, and joy to be thankful for and look forward to.

So, today, let’s remember to:

Listen to the birds chirping and feel the breeze kiss our faces while we walk our dogs.
Cherish the quiet moments while our dogs lay beside us, stretched out, sleeping soundly.
Be thankful if we have people who love, trust, and respect us.
Practice gratitude if we also love, trust, and respect the people in our lives.
Make every moment count. Our thoughts and emotions are ours. Let’s be in peace and harmony.

I didn’t have the opportunity to meet Heidi or Sophie, but I know they changed their humans’ lives forever for the better. But I’ll always chuckle when I recall meeting Loki. The big ol’ goofball yellow lab came charging out of the bedroom, skidded to a stop when he saw me, then jumped on the kitchen counter, slipped, and sidestepped his back paws across the floor when he excitedly stuck his head up my dress.

And, sweet Pip, I’ll miss how he happily wiggled as he presented anyone he loved with his tartar-covered Pecan toy. Then, once he settled, he showered you affectionately by gently sniffing your eyelids.

May we remember that life is precious and that we love ourselves, our dogs, and our favorite people as much as possible daily.
