Clarity

Hello from me, Mabel. I’m here in snowy Columbus, Ohio.

Many of you are back to your usual routines, reading the news and wishing you could do more for those affected by natural disasters, violence, and suffering. Or maybe you had significant snowfall, like us. I love playing in the snow almost as much as chasing water. 

We dogs are clear about what we want and go for it. You humans, not so much.

On Sunday, my human and I went for our regular walk. It was super cold, so we traipsed around a short loop and then got in the car to warm up. Then we drove to where my human let me play on my long leash.

My human still tries not to be nervous about using a long line. She loves and never wants to hinder my happiness when I’ve got the zooms, but she doesn’t want the leash tangled around my pork chop legs. She tries to keep up with me when I start running but worries that one or both of us might get hurt because I race too fast to the end of the leash. 

As you can guess, my human can’t keep up with me. I’m a dog, and I need to move fast.

She thought she was so bright with her big idea of tossing treats away from her and then getting super excited, over-the-top, cheering me on when I zoomed towards her. Of course, I got lots of treats every time, too.

Well, our routine was working perfectly for us until it snowed. I couldn’t find the treats or contain my enthusiasm for springing and speeding through slush. 

I bunny hopped, pounced, zigged, and zagged so many times to my human, saying, “Be careful,” which kinda takes the fun out of it, you know? She may not be a connoisseur of long-line handling yet, but she wants me to have fun and stay safe. She booked my SniffSpot that afternoon so I could freely frolic and face-plant in the snow.

Oh goodness, I can run fast, she said I sound like a stampede of buffalos. And, isn’t that what life is all about, joy? Is there any more tremendous glee than us dogs in zoom zoom mode?

She may not be clear about much in life, but she’s sure I’m happiest when I’m racing, romping, and playing.
